06/10/2007 - Minneapolis, MN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jason Bartlett was 3-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs as Minnesota doubled up Washington, 6-3, to salvage the finale of a three-game set at the Metrodome.

Torii Hunter finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored for the Twins, who won for just the second time in eight tries. Jeff Cirillo also drove in a run for Minnesota.

"This was almost a must win," said Bartlett. "We haven't been playing great. They got the first two so we needed this one."

Boof Bonser (5-2) allowed three runs on nine hits in five innings of work to pick up the win. Joe Nathan hurled a perfect ninth to earn his 14th save.

Ronnie Belliard was 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Nationals, who took two of three in the series. Felipe Lopez and Brian Schneider also drove in a run apiece for Washington.

"People haven't given us enough credit," said the Nats' Dmitri Young. "We are a bunch of hard workers here. There is some good young talent and a manager who believe in us. We just need to keep building from here."

Mike Bacsik (1-3) gave up four runs -- three earned -- on nine hits in five innings of work en route to the loss.

The Twins took an early 3-0 lead in the first. Luis Castillo doubled to left and quickly scored on Bartlett's single up the middle. Bartlett advanced 90 feet on a Michael Cuddyer ground out and eventually scored when Hunter came through with a two-out single. Hunter then crossed the plate from first base on a Mike Redmond single. Ryan Langerhans tried to gun down Hunter at third on the base hit and the ball got away from Belliard at third and went into the camera well, allowing Hunter to score.

The Nats got a run back in the second after Ryan Church, Belliard and Schneider slapped consecutive one-out singles.

Minnesota answered with a run in the third. Hunter singled, moved to third on Redmond's base hit and crossed the plate after Cirillo singled up the middle.

Washington began to chip away in the fourth. Church led off with a single, moved to second on Belliard's infield single and advanced to third on Langerhans' one-out walk before scoring on Lopez's ground ball to first.

The Nats then made it a 4-3 game in the fifth. Young got on with a one-out single, advanced to second when Bonser issued a free pass to Austin Kearns and came across the plate on Belliard 's two-out RBI single.

The Twins rebounded and extended their lead to 5-3 with a run in the seventh. Nick Punto started things with a one-out base hit, swiped second and moved to third on a Castillo ground ball before Bartlett rapped a two-out single to left.

Minnesota added an insurance run in the seventh. Hunter led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a Redmond's slow grounder to third. Cirillo then slapped a ground ball to Young at first but the bulky first baseman threw the ball past Saul Rivera, who was covering the bag. Hunter rounded third and scored on the error to make it 6-3.

Game Notes

Punto's stolen base was his 12th of the year...Young now has six errors on the season...The Twins avoided being swept at home for the first time by a National League team...Twins catcher Joe Mauer, who returned to Minnesota's lineup Friday after 32 days on the disabled list sat out the game.

Teams that should be in: Michigan State, Indiana
Work left to do: Illinois, Purdue, Michigan, Iowa

Behind the big two, the pecking order might be in a bit of flux. Has Michigan State passed Indiana after handling the Hoosiers in East Lansing? Where is Illinois in that mix? What looked like a four-big league last week could be morphing into five -- and even six is not unthinkable at this point if everything breaks right.

Should be in:

Michigan State [21-8 (8-6), RPI: 20, SOS: 15] The Spartans made it four-for-four on the homestand, a gigantic accomplishment that leaves them in extremely good shape. MSU is only 1-6 on the road and is at Michigan and at Wisconsin to close things out, meaning the date with the Wolverines on Tuesday looms very, very large. Beating Texas early will hold up well, as will the rout of Bradley and the win over BYU, but will 8-8 be enough? It very well could be, as the computer numbers are good, but why chance it?

Indiana [18-9 (8-6), RPI: 24, SOS: 32] Hmm ... good thing the last two are at Northwestern and home to Penn State, because IU might want to get both to feel completely safe after dropping its third in the last four, fading after halftime at Michigan State. Who knew the best nonconference win would be over Southern Illinois, which is a gift that keeps on giving for the Hoosiers. The win over Wisconsin also looks good on the mantel.

Work left to do:

Illinois [21-9 (9-6), RPI: 31, SOS: 25] A good performance at Penn State leaves the Illini in pretty good shape. Can they go to Iowa and take care of business to really look on their way? That's a huge game, as there is a possible cluster of teams that will end at 9-7. Illinois beat Bradley, but has lost to Xavier. A 9-7 mark and a semifinals trip in Chicago could be enough with the computer profile hanging in there, but it would be better not to mess around, clinching at least a tie for third.

Purdue [18-10 (7-7), RPI: 47, SOS: 28] Couldn't get it done at Iowa, but did win at Northwestern to put 9-7 squarely in sight. Where does that leave the Boilermakers, though? Even if they beat Minnesota and Northwestern at home, that won't help the computer numbers. Nonconference wins over Virginia, DePaul and Oklahoma are solid, but not spectacular. The Boilers very well might need an upset in the B10 quarters to have a legit claim.

Michigan [19-10 (7-7), RPI: 55, SOS: 53] Well, Michigan did what it needed to do, winning at Minnesota to take control of its fate. The Wolverines have Michigan State and an already-wrapped-up-the-league Ohio State at home to close, so the chances are there. Win both and we can talk. There is no marquee win yet in the profile, and the Wolverines were splattered in several games against name opponents. A mediocre computer profile fueled by a lack of road wins isn't helping, either.

Iowa [16-12 (8-6), RPI: 80, SOS: 64] For the sake of being complete, we'll add Iowa, this season's Stanford. It's plausible that the Hawkeyes could get to 10-6 (at Penn State, vs. Illinois left), but where does that leave them after a gruesome nonconference performance where the best win was over ... Toledo? Iowa State? Cornell?? If they get to 10-6, we can start to look at what they need to do in the B10 tourney, although my gut sense is that they would need to make the final and have knocked off Ohio State or Wisconsin on the way to have any real claim.

MySportsbook.com: NFL draft - The NFC South


In part two of MySportsbook.com’s draft preview, we’ll take a look at a division that was extremely disappointing last season: the NFC South.  Many “experts” predicted the Panthers to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, of course they could not even make the playoffs in an extremely weak NFC.  The Saints definitely made up for the disappointing seasons of their NFC South brethren by exploding out of no where en route to the NFC Championship game.  For the avid NFL gambler, it is imperative to pay attention to the NFL draft.  Although free agency gets a ton of publicity, the successful franchises build their teams around the draft.

1. New Orleans Saints
Who would have thought this time last year that the Saints would be the favorites to win the NFC South for the 2007 campaign?  New Orleans is loaded with firepower on the offensive side of the ball but with the exodus of Joe Horn they will most likely look to draft a WR on Day 1.  Despite having the NFL’s 3rd ranked pass defense last season, the Saints will most likely upgrade their CB’s with one of their first two picks. Other possibilities for the Saints will be TE and DT.  Because of where they will be selecting (27th), the Saints could go the “best available player” route which could net a LB.

2. Carolina Panthers
Carolina was one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL last season.  With the signing of David Carr, expect the very first quarterback controversy to come out of Carolina if Jake Delhomme doesn’t rebound quickly from an average 2007 season. With veteran safety Mike Minter getting up there in age, they will look to draft a safety on Day 1 but probably not in the first round.  LB is another need with the loss of Chris Draft to go along with Dan Morgan’s concussion problems.  If TE Greg Olsen is still on the board, he might be too good to pass up despite their needs on the defensive side of the ball.

3. Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons were another NFC South team to have a disappointing 2007 season.  The Falcons have been plenty busy during the off season with plenty of players coming and going including a new head coach.  The Falcons were able to improve their draft position with the trade of coveted backup QB Matt Schaub.  High on the list of Day 1 needs will be a defensive end to replace Patrick Kerney and a hard hitting safety since Lawyer Milloy is nearing the end of his career.  With an additional 2nd round pick, the Falcons could attempt to trade up to acquire local product WR Calvin Johnson.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Age really caught up to the Bucs last season.  The Bucs still have plenty of household names on defense in Ronde Barber, Simeon Rice and Derrick Brooks but the one thing those three have in common is unfortunately age.  It is imperative for the Bucs to get much younger, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Despite having bigger needs on the defensive side of the ball, WR Calvin Johnson is the most likely pick if he is still available when the Bucs pick at the four spot.  This would suit Bucs’ faithful just fine as Johnson is widely considered the top talent in the draft and it is a position of need for the Bucs.
