Sid the Kid has big night at 2007 NHL awards

Hockey Betting Lines

06/15/2007 - Toronto, ON (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Sidney Crosby finished his fantastic season with another two awards to go with his Art Ross trophy, as he garnered the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player and was also awarded the Lester B. Pearson award as most valuable player as voted upon by the NHL Players Association at the season-ending awards ceremony on Thursday.

Crosby finished the season with 120 points (36 goals, 84 assists) to become the youngest player ever to secure the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading scorer at the age of 19 years, seven months. It was later revealed that he skated the last few weeks of the regular season and the entire postseason with a broken foot. Crosby was the youngest Hart finalist since Wayne Gretzky was nominated at 19 years, five months in 1979-80. Gretzky took home the Hart that season.

"It kinda hits you right away when you win," said Crosby. "Any honor is a privilege, I can't rank them, it's a great accomplishment. Getting recognition from the guys you play against each and every night is special, these guys are part of the NHL family. I'm not going to say that the Hart doesn't mean more with the writers here."

The Hart is voted upon by the Professional Hockey Writer's Association.

Of the other two Hart finalists, one took home one trophy while the other went home empty-handed.

Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils won his third Vezina trophy as the 35- year-old set an NHL record this season with 48 wins. His win total eclipsed Bernie Parent's record of 47 wins in the 1974-74 season. In addition, he posted career-highs in games played (78), shutouts (12) and minutes played (4,696). He finished the season with a 48-23-7 mark with a 2.18 goals-against averaged and a .922 save percentage.

"I'm a little surprised," said Brodeur. "Luongo was right there, he was with a new team and kept winning games. I'm just a 35-year-old trying to hang with the younger guys."

Luongo completed the 2006-2007 campaign at 47-22-6, just one win shy of Brodeur's record-breaking mark. He finished with a 2.29 GAA and a .921 save percentage.

Crosby's teammate Evgeni Malkin took home the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie. Malkin wasted no time making an impact in the NHL as he became the first player in 89 years to score goals in each of his first six games. Before Malkin, only three players in NHL history had scored at least one goal in each of their first six (or more) games and all did so in 1917-18, the league's inaugural season. The 20-year-old went on to lead all rookies in goals (33), power-play goals (16), assists (52) and points (85).

A familiar face captured the Norris Trophy as Detroit's Nicklas Lidstrom won the award given to the league's outstanding defenseman for the fifth time in six years. He tied for the league lead among defensemen in plus-40 rating, ranked third among all players in ice time per game with 27 minutes, 29 seconds and finished fifth among blueliners in scoring with 62 points (13 goals, 49 assists). He joins Bobby Orr (eight), Doug Harvey (seven) and Ray Bourque (five) as the only defensemen to garner at least five Norris trophies.

"It feels a little bit unbelievable," said Lidstrom. "Ray Bourque was a player I looked up to before I came into the league. I always admired him. To be tied with him is a great feeling."

Lidstrom's teammate, Pavel Datsyuk, won his second consecutive Lady Byng Trophy for combining sportsmanship with a high standard of play. Datsyuk led the Red Wings in scoring for the second consecutive season, matching a career high with 87 points (27 goals, 60 assists) with only 20 penalty minutes. He becomes the first player to win consecutive Lady Byng's since Paul Kariya did it when he was with the Ducks in 1996 and 1997.

Another repeat winner on Thursday was Carolina Hurricanes captain Rod Brind'Amour, who won the Frank Selke Trophy as the league's outstanding defensive forward. Brind'Amour ranked second among all NHL centers with a 59.2 percent faceoff winning percentage and ranked third among forwards in average ice time per game with 23 minutes and 19 seconds.

Alain Vigneault of the Vancouver Canucks won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's top coach, just barely beating last year's winner, Lindy Ruff of the Buffalo Sabres. In his first year at the helm with Vancouver, Vigneault guided the Canucks to a franchise best 49 wins and 105 points. He became the first Canuck coach since Pat Quinn in 1992 to win the award.

"I really am surprised," said Vigneault. "I really thought Michel (Therrien) would have got it considering what he did with Pittsburgh this season."

Montreal Canadiens captain Saku Koivu accepted the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for leadership and humanitarian contributions to his community. Koivu's exemplary support of cancer treatment and research, and his personal example of courage as a cancer survivor, helped inspire his teammates and the many patients and their families who benefit from his generosity.

Boston Bruins center Phil Kessel received the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Kessel made his NHL debut with Boston this season, but was diagnosed with testicular cancer in early December, However, he returned to play one month later and missed only 12 games.

Also on Thursday, Tampa Bay Lightning center Vincent Lecavalier received the Maurice Richard Trophy as goal-scoring leader with 52 goals this season and the Minnesota Wild's Niklas Backstrom and Manny Fernandez were awarded the William Jennings Trophy as goaltenders on the club allowing the fewest goals, as the duo yielded just 191 on the season.

Voting for these awards was conducted at the conclusion of the regular season.

Pittsburgh earned their passage to the big game by beating their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, 23-14 in yesterday's AFC Championship Game. The Steelers jumped on Baltimore early, building a 13-0 first half lead, and never let up on their way to a fairly easy win. Although the Ravens did close to within two points in the fourth quarter, it never appeared as if they had enough offense to pull off the upset.

The Steelers dominating defense held Baltimore to a total of 198 yards while allowing them to convert just three third downs in 13 attempts. Pittsburgh also forced quarterback Joe Flacco into three interceptions, one of which safety Troy Polamalu returned fourty yards for a touchdown.

The Cardinals, by far the playoff team with the longest odds to reach Super Bowl XLIII, did so yesterday with a 32-25 upset of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship. Arizona charged out of the gates and built a 24-6 halftime lead that had the Eagles venerable defense reeling. Quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald did most of the damage, connecting on three first half touchdowns.

Arizona, however, could not sustain their momentum and the Eagles took a 25-24 with 10:45 left to play in the fourth. The Cardinals, with the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance, mounted a fourteen play, 72 yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:52 off the clock. Warner hit running back Tim Hightower on a short screen for the go-ahead, game clinching score that will forever live in Cardinal infamy.

MySportsbook.com's Super Bowl XLIII Betting Odds:

Pittsburgh Steelers -6.5 (-110), Over 46.5 (-110), -260 (Money line)

Matt Foust won both of his conference championship plays yesterday and he is ready to serve up plenty of Super Bowl action.
