Schnyder falls in Fes quarters

04/29/2010 - Fes, Morocco (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Swiss veteran Patty Schnyder was among Thursday's quarterfinal upset victims at the $220,000 Moroccan Grand Prix tennis tournament.

The second-seeded Schnyder was ousted by Romanian rookie Simona Halep, who landed in her first-ever semifinal at the WTA Tour level with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) victory over her 31-year-old Swiss counterpart. Halep moved on in 1 hour, 23 minutes by piling up six service breaks against the aging Schnyder.

The 18-year-old Halep, a qualifier this week, has reached at least the quarterfinals in her first three WTA events. Her semifinal opponent on Friday will be Czech, and fellow non-seed, Renata Voracova.

Day 4's other upset occurred when Voracova took out fifth-seeded German Angelique Kerber 7-5, 6-2 on the red clay at Fes Royal Tennis Club.

Seventh-seeded Czech Iveta Benesova avoided the upset bug by coming from behind to beat Spanish qualifier Laura Pous Tio 2-6, 6-1, 6-0.

Benesova's final-four opponent will be France's Alize Cornet, who handled Brit Anne Keothavong 7-5, 6-2.

Fes, which is the only WTA stop in Africa, serves as a tune-up for the French Open, which will commence May 23 in Paris.

This week's champion will earn $37,000.
