The 27-year-old's win over Jankovic came after a semifinal victory over Ana Ivanovic, a quarterfinal triumph over Lucie Safarova, a third-round takeout of second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, and a second-round defeat of No. 13 seed Francesca Schiavone.
Jankovic, meanwhile, was looking for her third title here, and gained a berth in the final after her comeback win over Serena Williams in the semis. That match, in which Jankovic staved off a match point, lasted a little under three hours. However, the Serbian fell just short Saturday.
Jankovic won 59 percent of her first serve points against Martinez Sanchez, a serve-and-volley specialist who recorded a first-serve percentage of just 50 but won 76 percent of her first serve points.
Martinez Sanchez has won two of her three career matchups with Jankovic.
